ÖVP stands behind Kurz – “Never before has it been so unified” – Politics abroad

Elisabeth Köstinger (42), ÖVP politician and close confidante of Austria’s ex-Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (35), stood behind Kurz on behalf of her party.

“There has never been such a degree of unity behind a party chairman as in the last few days,” Köstinger told BILD in Vienna. The governors and the entire team of the federal government stand united behind Kurz.

With his resignation, Kurz “again proved his greatness”. Köstinger continues: “Out of state political responsibility, he put his person on the back burner and resigned from office.”

DENN, so Köstinger: “For us as a People’s Party – as a team around Sebastian Kurz – it’s about the big picture. It would not have been possible for us to leave the country to chaos now and therefore now also this decision, this retreat into parliament. “

After investigative authorities had accused the young political star of fraud and corruption, Sebastian Kurz announced his resignation as Chancellor on Saturday.

▶︎ The allegations are about manipulated opinion polls and bought pro-short reporting – paid for via bogus bills from the state treasury. On Wednesday, more than 1,400 investigators searched the Chancellery, the headquarters of the short ÖVP party, other ministries and “Austria”, one of the country’s most important media houses.

Kurz said on Saturday: “The allegations are false. I will also be able to clear it up. ”He now wants to use the opportunity to dispel the allegations against him.

According to Köstinger, a lot is mixed up in the allegations against Kurz. “One is what is criminally relevant and the other is what may be written flippantly,” says Köstinger. She demanded: “The presumption of innocence must apply to every citizen in this country – including the Federal Chancellor.”

Köstinger rejects new elections: “We as the People’s Party do not want any new elections. We have to fight the corona pandemic, to shape the economic upswing again. ”She assumes that“ the Greens will now come to their senses again, that we will continue to work together ”.

That is what people in the country expect.

“Sebastian Kurz’s team is at his side and I am convinced that we will fight our way back,” said Köstinger.
