On Thursday, the government gave owners of vehicles with Russian license plates six months to register their car in Estonia or take it out of Estonia, BNS writes.

As Minister of Internal Affairs Lauri Läänemets noted, from September 13, vehicles with Russian license plates are prohibited from entering Estonia. “However, regarding vehicles with Russian license plates already in Estonia, we will not make any changes to the law, but will apply the legal norms currently in force,” Läänemets said.

He explained that residents of Estonia are required to register a vehicle brought into Estonia for their own use in the Estonian register within five days, while a foreigner must register his car after using it in Estonia for one year. “Therefore, cars with Russian license plates should have been in the Estonian register a long time ago,” Läänemets said.

According to him, now all owners of vehicles with Russian license plates must register their car in the Estonian registry or transport it to Russia within six months. However, sales tax and customs duties must be paid at the time of registration. “For example, in the case of a car costing 20,000 euros, the customs duty is almost 2,000 euros and the sales tax is 4,400 euros,” Läänemets pointed out.
