Research has shown that one of the side effects of oxycodone – respiratory distress – may be exacerbated when used simultaneously with paroxetine
In 2021, the SFK counted 450,000 users of oxycodone in the Netherlands. Recent research indicates that one of the side effects of oxycodone – respiratory distress – can worsen when used simultaneously with paroxetine. In 2021, there were six thousand people who may be taking oxycodone and paroxetine simultaneously. This is what the SFK writes this week in the Pharmaceutisch Weekblad.
Oxycodone is prescribed for severe pain, such as after surgery, an accident or cancer. It is also used in care in the palliative phase. In 2021, community pharmacies in the Netherlands provided oxycodone to 450,000 people on one or more occasions. Like other strong opioids, oxycodone has a high addiction risk. In addition, side effects such as nausea, constipation and difficulty breathing occur.
Researchers from the LUMC and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) concluded on the basis of a clinical trial among 25 healthy participants that these respiratory problems worsened if people also used the antidepressant paroxetine in addition to oxycodone.
Simultaneous use
In 2021, the SFK counted 136,000 users of paroxetine, an antidepressant of the SSRI type (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). In 2021, approximately six thousand people may be using oxycodone and paroxetine simultaneously. In this calculation, the SFK sees simultaneous use if paroxetine has also been dispensed within the period of use of oxycodone, or vice versa.
The researchers at the LUMC and the FDA have so far only looked at the antidepressant paroxetine, but indicate that the effect on breathing may also occur with other SSRIs. In total, the SFK counted 585,000 users of an SSRI in 2021, of which citalopram was the drug with the most users with 195,000 users. With the aforementioned 136,000 users, paroxetine came second and sertraline completed the top three within the SSRIs with 107,000 users in 2021.
Of the 450,000 oxycodone users, there were 24,000 who may have had concomitant use with an SSRI in 2021. That amounts to more than 5%. In addition to the six thousand users of paroxetine, these were over eight thousand users of citalopram and almost four thousand users of sertraline.
