Lower costs for Ozempic, Wegovy, insulin, and other critical medications are set to become a reality under new agreements with pharmaceutical giants.
president Donald J. Trump unveiled a series of agreements with Eli Lilly and Company and Novo Nordisk aimed at dramatically lowering prescription drug prices for Americans. The initiative promises historic reductions in the cost of widely-used medications, especially those targeting diabetes and obesity, and aims to rebalance the global pharmaceutical market.
1s and Insulin
The agreements specifically target GLP-1 receptor agonists and insulin, the two drug classes representing the highest annual expenditures in the United States healthcare system. This focused approach aims to deliver the most significant impact where costs are currently most burdensome.
Under the “TrumpRx” program, the monthly price of Ozempic and Wegovy will be slashed from $1,000 and $1,350, respectively, to just $350. Similarly, Zepbound and the investigational drug Orforglipron will see their monthly cost fall to an average of $346. Beyond these high-profile weight loss and diabetes drugs, novo Nordisk will provide widely-used insulin products like NovoLog and Tresiba for only $35 per month. Eli Lilly will offer Emgality (for migraine treatment) at $299 per pen and Trulicity (for diabetes) at $389 per month.
Expanding Medicare Access and Reducing Taxpayer Burden
The price reductions are poised to deliver considerable savings to government programs and expand access to vital medications for seniors. According to the announcement, Medicare prices for ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound will be $245 – less than half the prices considered by the previous administration. State Medicaid programs will also benefit from these reduced rates.
perhaps most substantially, these lower prices will enable Medicare to cover Wegovy and Zepbound for patients with obesity and related health conditions for the first time. Medicare beneficiaries will pay a copay of just $50 per month for these medications.
Rebalancing the Global Pharmaceutical Market
President Trump framed the announcement as a critical step toward reversing the obesity epidemic and addressing the broader chronic disease crisis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 40% of American adults are affected by obesity, underscoring the urgent need for affordable access to effective treatments.
A core component of the strategy involves rebalancing the global pharmaceutical system. “The United States, with less than five percent of the world’s population, generates roughly 75% of global pharmaceutical profits,” a senior official stated. “Americans pay more than three times the price that other developed nations pay for brand-name drugs.”
To address this disparity, the agreement mandates that both Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk guarantee Most-Favored-Nation (MFN) prices on all new medicines and extend MFN access to every State medicaid program.
Investing in American Manufacturing
Alongside the price cuts, both manufacturers have committed to significant investments in domestic manufacturing capacity. Novo Nordisk pledged an additional $10 billion to strengthen its U.S. footprint, including establishing end-to-end production of the Wegovy tablet within the country. Under President Trump’s leadership, Eli lilly has announced at least $27 billion in new U.S. manufacturing investments.
These investments signal a commitment to bolstering American supply chains and reducing reliance on foreign production, further solidifying the long-term benefits of this initiative.
