Researchers say the ozone layer is on the road to recovery. A four-year follow-up assessment by a UN-backed scientific panel has confirmed that the ozone layer is recovering. The committee also stated that the ozone hole over Antarctica will be completely reversed in about four decades.
Scientists also point out that the recovery of the ozone layer will help combat climate change and limit temperature rise. The ozone layer is expected to return to its 1980 size. The ozone layer will return to normal over Antarctica by about 2066, the Arctic by 2045, and the rest of the world by 2040. The assessment was conducted by a scientific team from the World Meteorological Organization, the United Nations Environment Program and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The committee also warned about the potential impacts of climate mitigation techniques such as geo-engineering on the ozone layer.
A type of geoengineering known as stratospheric aerosol injection, intended to reflect sunlight to reduce global warming, can adversely affect the ozone layer. The unintended consequences of geoengineering could alter temperature, circulation, ozone production, and increase the rate of destruction, the researchers said.
