Danish MP Mogens Jensen, rapporteur of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe on media freedom and safety of journalists, considers Azerbaijan and Turkey to be the leaders in the number of violations of journalists’ rights in Europe.

“Cases of violations of journalists’ and media rights as a whole continue to increase everywhere. In 2015, the number of such cases was 180, and in 2022 it reached 280.

The worst situation is in Azerbaijan and Turkey. In these and several other countries, we observe serious attacks on journalists, including murder, harassment, and smear campaigns against press workers, especially women.

Today, 68 journalists are in prison in Europe, and this is a big problem that we have to solve,” Yensen said in an interview with the Media Box resource at today’s PACE session.

In response to the question about his proposals on this issue, press freedom speaker Jensen said: “We ask these countries to live according to the standards of the Council of Europe, of which they are members, to change the legislation and its application so that such situations do not occur. We also call for the implementation of the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights.

At the same time, we call on all countries to develop a national strategy for the development of the press and to start a dialogue between the press and the government in order to achieve respect for the freedom and safety of the press,” Jensen said.
