Pacific Ocean, the volcano erupted under the sea – an island formed in the Pacific Ocean! – nasa spots new island in pacific ocean as underwater volcano erupts

A new island has surfaced in the Pacific Ocean, according to NASA.

The Holme Rip volcano, located in the southwest Pacific Ocean not far from Australia, began erupting earlier this month. Located in the central Tonga Islands, the volcano began spewing steam and ash.

They mixed with the sea and changed the color of the water. 11 hours after the volcano erupted, a new island emerged from the surface of the water in the Pacific Ocean, according to NASA’s Earth Observatory.

NASA has captured images of the island through satellites. On September 14, researchers reported that the island was 4,000 square meters (1 acre) in area and 10 meters (33 feet) above sea level. But by September 20, the island had grown to 24,000 square meters (6 acres), researchers said.

The island-like structures formed during the eruptions of underwater submarine volcanoes are often short-lived, the researchers said. In 1995, an island in the ocean formed by the eruption of a volcano called Ladiki remained untouched for 25 years.

Notably, an island created in 2020 by the eruption of the Ladiki volcano was submerged under water two months later.
