Man accused of rape in Rio
A man identified as Cristiano da Conceição, 51, was arrested this Friday (14) on charges of raping two children, one aged 13 and the other 11. The arrest took place in Guaratiba, in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro, after an operation by the Police Station for Women in Nova Iguaçu. The suspect, who acted as a pai de santo, was hiding on Rua Canoaná.
According to information from the Civil Police, a preventive arrest warrant had been issued against Cristiano by the 1st Specialized Court in Crimes against Children and Adolescents in early June.
According to the report of the 13-year-old victim, the suspect approached her in a square in the West Zone of Rio, in December of last year. Cristiano would have invited the girl and a friend to a house in Pedra de Guaratiba, under the pretext of providing spiritual assistance. At the scene, the victim was raped in the presence of another 14-year-old teenager. The mother found the young woman near a shopping center in Campo Grande the next day.
In addition, investigations point out that there was a rape involving a child of Cristiano’s family, when she was 11 years old. Taking advantage of the mother’s absence, the suspect took the girl to the bedroom and sexually abused her. The victim reported that he threatened her, saying: ‘If you tell anyone, I’m going to do a macumba to kill your parents’.
Delegate Mônica Areal, responsible for the arrest, stated that Cristiano used his position as a pai de santo to commit the abuses. Investigations, initiated in 2021 by the 35th police station (Campo Grande), indicate that the suspect was known and respected in the region. Relatives of the victims report that the abuses had taken place for years.
The delegate makes an appeal for other possible victims to report similar cases, in order to collaborate with the identification and arrest of sexual aggressors. The protection of children and adolescents is essential, and community reporting and collaboration are essential to combat this type of crime.
