Paju City ranked first for two consecutive years in the ‘2023 Tourism Special Zone Promotion Plan Execution Status Evaluation’ conducted by Gyeonggi Province.

The ‘2023 Tourism Special Zone Promotion Plan Execution Status Evaluation’ is an evaluation conducted to comprehensively evaluate tourism special zone projects in Gyeonggi Province and establish a plan for the continuous development of tourism special zones.

The evaluation items include the special zone’s potential (30 points), convenience of use (20 points), efficiency (20 points), and sustainability (30 points), and a joint evaluation was conducted with the participation of experts and local residents.

Paju Tongildongsan Tourism Special Zone received the highest score in the province with a total score of 90 points, ranking first among the three tourism special zones in Gyeonggi Province, including Dongducheon and Pyeongtaek. Suwon and Goyang, which are special cities under the Tourism Promotion Act, conducted their own evaluation and were excluded from this evaluation.

The Tongildongsan Tourism Special Zone received high scores for ▲promotional projects through collaboration with public institutions, etc., ▲attracting various new projects within the tourism special zone, such as the introduction of a national museum cluster and a campsite, and ▲programs that utilize regional characteristics, such as the Heyri Art Festival, Samdopum Festival, and Paju City Tour.

In addition to this, it received good evaluations for ▲actively implementing the improvements suggested in last year’s evaluation and ▲promoting the project according to the tourism special zone promotion plan.

The Tongildongsan Tourist Special Zone, which covers an area of approximately 3 million m2 (910,000 pyeong) in Seongdong-ri and Beopheung-ri, Tanhyeon-myeon, was designated as a tourist special zone in April 2019. Major tourist facilities such as the National Folk Museum, Odusan Unification Observatory, and Matgoeul are concentrated here.

Paju City is promoting various projects to revitalize the Tongildongsan Tourism Special Zone. Last year, it was selected for the Special Situation Area Development Competition Project and secured a total project cost of 8 billion won (6.4 billion won from the national budget and 1.6 billion won from the city budget) to create the ‘Family Art Camping Peace Village’.

Last June, a mutual cooperation system was established with Paju DMZ Gondola Co., Ltd., Jangdan Kong Wellbeing Maru Co., Ltd., and Odusan Unification Observatory, laying the foundation for the development of the special zone.

Mayor Kim Kyung-il of Paju said, “The Tongildongsan Tourism Special Zone has various tourism resources such as the National Museum Cluster and Jangdan Kong Wellbeing Maru. In addition, when the Family Art Camping Peace Village is developed, it is expected to be reborn as a residential tourism destination,” and “We will link the abundant tourism resources around Tongildongsan to develop into a competitive cultural tourism city.”
