ISLAMABAD: Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s party Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has started trying to woo independents to form a coalition government. Imran Khan’s party, with the support of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), succeeded in fielding the victorious Wasim Qawadir. Wasim publicly announced that he had joined the PML – me. The party is hoping to gain the support of more independents.

Nawaz Sharif is trying to form a government with the support of Bilawal Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). Shahbaz Sharif, president of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) and Nawaz’s brother, held talks with PPP leaders Asifali Zardari and Bilawal. It is reported that Asifali Zardari demanded that his son Bilawal be given the post of Prime Minister. Bilawal Bhutto responded that the door is open for an alliance with anyone.

Nawaz’s side has made it clear that they are ready to form a government with the PPP but are not interested in giving up the post of Prime Minister. Hence, the PML-N is also mulling ways to form the government with the support of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM-P) which has 17 seats and the smaller parties which have won 12 seats. If that happens, the idea is to make Shahbaz Sharif the Prime Minister instead of Nawaz and make Nawaz Sharif’s daughter Maryam the Chief Minister of Punjab. Shahbaz Sharif’s good relationship with the army is the reason for this move.

101 independents who support jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan won the election. Since Imran’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has a competitive edge, its followers have come forward as independents. The results were announced for 264 seats in the 265-member assembly. PML-N won 76 seats and Bilawal Bhutto-led Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) won 54 seats. The support of 133 people is required to form the government.

Of the 366 seats in the National Assembly, 266 are filled by election and 70 by nomination. Of these, 60 seats are for women and 10 seats are for minorities. The fact that independents are not involved in nominations will be a setback for Imran’s side. A majority of 169 seats in the National Assembly is required.

Meanwhile, the army has expressed its support for Nawaz Sharif’s efforts to form the government. Chief of Army Staff Asim Muneer responded positively to Nawaz Sharif’s opinion that he should form a coalition government and get the country out of the current crisis.

Meanwhile, PTI is gearing up for nationwide agitation. Many independents have come to court alleging irregularities.
