Pakistan Fortifies Islamabad to Block Imran Khan’s PTI Protest March

Pakistan has transformed Islamabad into a heavily fortified zone ahead of a planned September 27 protest march by Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party. Authorities deployed tens of thousands of security personnel, blocked major highways with shipping containers, and detained key figures as party leaders debated postponing the demonstration.

The federal government moved aggressively to block the upcoming demonstration by deploying paramilitary Rangers, canceling police leave, and sealing entry points into the capital.

Inside the PTI Leadership Debates and the Postponement Debate

As the weekend approached, senior figures within Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party weighed whether to launch the march as scheduled on September 27 or push the date back to early October to exhaust government resources and circumvent the sweeping blockades. Party insiders discussed shifting the mobilization window to October 5–10, though Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and other PTI leaders have been leading preparations for the mobilisation alongside other regional leaders.

By Friday, however, a senior party leader speaking anonymously confirmed that the march had been pushed back to leave Peshawar on October 4. The party insisted the delay stemmed entirely from its own tactical strategy rather than external pressure, distancing itself from the Jamaat-i-Islami, which had previously suspended its own fuel-price protest following a direct phone call from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to its leadership.

Medical Prep at Shifa International Hospital and Arrests of PTI Leadership

Amid the political standoff, hospital authorities made unusual preparations for the incarcerated former prime minister. A secure, thousands-of-square-feet basement facility at Shifa International Hospital was outfitted with modern medical equipment, two treatment rooms, a media area, and tightened security. Sources indicated Khan was brought there overnight for a brief medical examination before returning to prison, though the hospital stood ready for a longer stay.

The state simultaneously targeted the party’s leadership structure. Police detained Khan’s three sisters—all over the age of 65—in Lahore under a 1960 public order law permitting preventive detention without charge, alongside at least six lawmakers in Islamabad who were taken from parliament lodgings. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi also faced arrest warrants as state forces moved to neutralize the organizational core of the provincial stronghold.

“The government is panicking – that’s why they have put Islamabad under siege, that’s why they are abducting our ministers. But Imran Khan is the most popular leader of the country and people will come out for him.”

The central government utilized emergency powers to authorize Pakistan Rangers troops. The deployment orders empowered security forces to respond in self-defence against any violent activities encountered during their operational duties, while authorities instituted a ban on public gatherings in Islamabad.

Civilian Disruption and the Wider Political Stalemate

The massive security deployment left ordinary residents facing severe disruptions.

PTI leaders maintained that their core demand remains the unconditional release of Imran Khan—who has been imprisoned since August 2023 on corruption charges—alongside an end to solitary confinement and restrictions on family and legal visits. With political channels stalled and formal dialogue committees absent, both sides dug in as security forces maintained their grip on the capital pending the rescheduled October mobilization.
