Islamabad: Even after 12 days of elections in Pakistan, there is no clarity on which party will form the government.

No party got a majority in the country’s general election on February 8. Only 266 of the total 336 seats in Parliament are elected by the people. The remaining 70 seats will be distributed according to the majority of the winning parties. A total of 169 members are required to form the government.

Elections were held for 265 member posts out of 266 member posts to be elected by the people. In one constituency the election did not take place due to the death of the candidate. If you capture 133 seats, you can form the government. Neither party met that target.

Independent candidates backed by jailed former prime minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan-Tehreek-Inzaab (PTI) won 93 seats. Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) won 75 seats and Pakistan People’s Party 54 seats. The Muttahida Qaumi Movement won 17 constituencies.

Even though Imran Khan’s supporters won by a large margin, there is a situation where they cannot form the government. Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz Party and Pakistan Peoples Party formed an alliance to form the government. Government formation talks are ongoing. The leaders of both the parties are negotiating on the post of Prime Minister, ministers and power sharing. Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz party leader Nawaz Sharif and Pakistan Peoples Party leader Bilawal Bhutto were in the race for the post of prime minister.

The top leaders of the Pakistan People’s Party and Pakistan Muslim League (N) held successive talks but no consensus was reached on the Prime Minister’s post and power-sharing plan.

The 5th round of negotiations took place the evening before yesterday. The meeting was held at the residence of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz party senior leader and Senator Ishaq Dar and was attended by prominent figures from both parties. The Pakistan People’s Party committee consisted of Murad Ali Shah, Qamar Zaman Khaira, Nadeem Afzal Chan and others.

No decision was reached in the three-hour long talks. Talks were temporarily suspended to meet again at 10:00 PM. But at 10:00 PM the meeting did not take place. The meeting was then declared closed at 11:00 PM. It was informed that the next meeting will start today.

While the talks are on the sidelines, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) chief Bilawal Bhutto is reported to be shrewdly moving the dice to get Nawaz’s party to back down and become prime minister. That means the pro-Imran Khan MPs have joined the Sunni Ittehad Council. He is said to be trying to form a government with their support. But it is not that easy. Because Imran Khan’s P.T.I. The party has already said that the Pakistan People’s Party is unlikely to support it.

The new government has to convene the first session of Parliament by February 29. By then, it is hoped that a consensus will be reached between the two leading parties regarding power sharing.

Muttaqeedah Qaumi Movement has extended its support to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Party.
