Pakistan: more than 300 dead from rains and floods

by time news

More than five weeks of monsoon rains and floods across Pakistan have killed over 300 people. Among the dead were many women and children who could not be saved due to poor infrastructure, and at least 300 people were injured

Since the middle of June, a flood has not stopped falling in Pakistan. Rivers overflowed, damaging highways and bridges and disrupting traffic. Almost 9,000 houses were completely destroyed or partially damaged.

Particularly hard hit was the impoverished southwestern province of Baluchistan, where 99 people died in rain-related incidents and subsequent flooding, followed by 70 deaths in southern Sindh province. There were also 61 deaths in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which borders Afghanistan, and 60 in the eastern province of Punjab.

Among the dead were many women and children who could not be saved due to poor infrastructure and a lack of rescue teams, at least 300 people were injured.

Every year, much of Pakistan struggles with the annual monsoons, drawing criticism for poor government planning. The season lasts from July to September. The rains are essential for irrigating crops and replenishing dams and other water reservoirs in Pakistan, but they cause enormous damage as the country fails to restore infrastructure.
