Islamabad: Pakistan has reacted to the situation in Bangladesh, which is facing political turmoil after the resignation of Sheikh Hasina. Pakistan has expressed its support to the people of Bangladesh and hoped that stability would return to Bangladesh soon. A statement issued by the Pakistani Foreign Ministry said that ‘The government and people of Pakistan stand in solidarity with the people of Bangladesh and hope for a peaceful and early return to normalcy.’ The statement further said that ‘We are confident that the strong spirit and unity of the Bangladeshi people will lead them to a harmonious future.’
Pakistan and Bangladesh relations
Relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh have been tense for many years. Although the people of Bangladesh have not forgotten the atrocities of the Pakistani regime, these relations became more tense during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure. Pakistan never liked Sheikh Hasina’s friendship with India. Sheikh Hasina, supporting India, boycotted the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) summit since 2016, after which its meeting has not taken place. Pakistan is also a member of SAARC.
Pakistan gets a chance with the departure of Sheikh Hasina
Now once the power changes in Bangladesh, Pakistan is hoping for a change in diplomatic relations. Pakistan is looking at Sheikh Hasina’s departure from Bangladesh as an opportunity. Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI and its proxy Jamaat-e-Islami were active in the movement against Sheikh Hasina. Jamaat-e-Islami opened its office for the first time after 13 years after Hasina left.
The student movement that started against reservation in jobs in Bangladesh had turned into an anti-Sheikh Hasina movement. Sheikh Hasina used force to stop the movement, which flared up the movement. After the violence that broke out on Sunday, the students called for a Dhaka march on Monday. After the increasing numbers in Dhaka city, the army also refused to help Sheikh Hasina. After this, Sheikh Hasina resigned on Monday afternoon and left the country in an army plane and came to India. The President of Bangladesh announced the new interim government on Tuesday evening. Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus has been made the head of the interim government. The rest of the members will be announced later.
