Geneva: Kashmiri activists have shown a mirror to Pakistan which is trying to show its importance in the Islamic world. Kashmiri activist Javed Baig exposed the situation of Muslims in Pakistan at the 55th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva. Beg strongly criticized the Punjabi rulers of Pakistan for the poor condition of Shia Muslims in Pakistan. He described Pakistan as a dangerous place for Shias. Baig discussed the dire situation of Shia Pashtuns in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region of Pakistan. Along with this, he also compared the situation in Pakistan with the progress seen in Kashmir.Comparison of Jammu and Kashmir with Pakistan

The Kashmiri activist has exposed the situation of Shia minorities in Pakistan at a time when, a day earlier on Friday, Pakistan had presented a resolution in the United Nations General Assembly regarding Islamophobia. Baig shared a copy of his speech at the UNHRC in a post on Twitter. In his address, Beg underlined the serious human rights violations being committed against Shia Muslims inside Pakistan. Comparing Pakistan to India’s Jammu and Kashmir, Baig described it as a land where development has taken root.

Baig wrote, the persecution of Shias in Pakistan has reached such an extent that Pakistani institutions, judiciary and media have become ineffective against them. “I have no hesitation in saying that compared to Pakistan, Jammu and Kashmir has become a bright spot where inter-religious harmony, progress and economic well-being of all have taken strong roots,” Beg said at the UNHRC.

Thousands of Shias have been killed in Pakistan

At the UNHRC, Beigh drew attention to ongoing sectarian violence targeting Shia Muslims in Parachinar, where the Turi and Shia Bangash Pashtun tribes bear the brunt of the propagation of Deobandi and Salafi extremist ideologies. The majority of Parachinar’s population belongs to the Turi and Shia Bangash Pashtun tribes, Baig wrote in the transcript. Deobandi and Salafi ideology consider them as infidels. For the last three decades, these Shia tribes have been victims of communal violence at the hands of extremist organizations following these ideologies.

He also mentioned the 2007 war in which thousands of Shias were killed at the hands of Sunni extremists. Along with this, he also condemned the recent target killing of six Shia school teachers of Turi Pashtun tribe. “With religious extremism on the rise in all parts of Pakistan, things are looking extremely bleak for the Shia Pashtuns of Parachinar,” the Kashmiri activist said.
