Supreme Court upholds death sentence of former Pakistani ruler Musharraf

In a landmark decision, Pakistan’s Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence of the late former military ruler, Pervez Musharraf, in a treason case. The case stems from Musharraf’s announcement of a state of emergency in Pakistan in 2007, during which he suspended the implementation of the Constitution.

The special court sentenced Musharraf to death in 2019 for the treason case, but the decision was later deemed unconstitutional by the Lahore High Court in 2022. However, a 5-judge Supreme Court session has now declared the Lahore High Court’s order invalid, ultimately upholding the death sentence against Musharraf.

Despite the ruling, Musharraf, who had been living abroad in Dubai, passed away on February 5, 2023, at the age of 79 due to prolonged ill health.

The decision is likely to spark further debate and discussion in Pakistan, raising questions about the legal proceedings surrounding the case and the implications for the country’s past and future political leaders.
