The famous Panguni Uttarad festival started today with the flag hoisting at the Palani Murugan Temple in Dindigul district. Anointing ceremonies were held at the Kodi Mandapam to wake up Sameda Muthukumaraswamy with Valli Deivana. 16 types of anointing and special decoration were held for Muthukumaraswamy, Valli-Deivana such as milk, fruit, rose water, sandalwood and Panchamirtham. Then Muthukumaraswamy came with Valli-Deivana to see the flag hoisting and got up at Sappara.

Then special poojas were performed for the flag tree and the yellow flag was hoisted with pictures of roosters and peacocks. Fireworks followed. The wedding will be held on March 17. The main event of the festival, Therottam, will be held on Friday, March 18. Every day Swami comes in various vehicles to walk around Ezhundaruli Veedi and show it to the devotees. The Panguni Order Festival will conclude on March 21 with the unfurling of the flag.

In Palani, the 3rd Battalion of Lord Murugan, festivals including Thaipusam and Panguni Uttiram are celebrated with much fanfare. A special feature of this festival is the pilgrimage to the Thaipusam festival and the Tirthakkavadi during the Panguni Uttara festival. During the summer months of Panguni and Chittirai, it is customary for devotees to take a Tirthakkavadi from the Kodumudi Cauvery River to anoint and worship Palaniandavar in order to cool down.

This year’s Panguni Uttara festival started today with the flag hoisting at Thiruavinankudi, a sub-temple of the Palani Murugan Temple. In turn, Grama Shanti, Vastu Shanti Puja and Astra Thevar Ula were held last night. Ganesha Puja, Punniyaka Vajanam and Kodippada Puja were held at the Thiruavinankudi temple this morning. Devotees who had gathered there at that time raised the slogan ‘Arogara for Vetrivel Murugan … Arogara for Veeravel Murugan …’.

On the eve of the festival, 16 types of anointing and decoration were held for Moolavar at the peak puja at 12 noon today at the Palani Murugan Temple. Then Ganesha was taken to the Moolavar Sanctuary and shown the Deeparadhana. This was followed by a procession to the temple of Shanmugar, Ursavar, Dwara Palakars, Mayilvakanam and Periyanayaki Amman for Somas Gander, Sivan, Periyanayaki Amman, Natarajar and Sivagami Amman.
