Palatine Teen Arrested Over Plot Targeting Aurora Hindu Temple

A 19-year-old Taco Bell cashier in Palatine, Illinois, was arrested after a co-worker’s tip-off and a jammed rifle thwarted an alleged mass shooting plot targeting a Hindu temple in Aurora.

Arrest in Palatine and the Aurora Temple Target

Law enforcement authorities arrested Alexandros Paporakis outside his home in the Chicago suburb of Palatine on Sunday afternoon after police departments in Palatine and Mount Prospect received an alert from a member of the public. Investigators determined that the 19-year-old had driven from his mother’s residence to the largest Hindu temple in southwest suburban Aurora.

Surveillance footage tracked Paporakis’s car entering the temple parking lot at 12:25 p.m. on Sunday and departing at 12:38 p.m. Prosecutors stated that Paporakis intended to kill a significant number of Indians at the sprawling place of worship, which was filled with large crowds observing Navaratri, a major Hindu holiday.

U.S. Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi, who represents Illinois’s 2nd Congressional District, revealed that he and his family were among the worshippers attending services at the temple that afternoon. It was a very special day, it was the start of one of the high holidays for the Hindu religion, if you will, which is called Navaratri, and so huge crowds visited that temple that day, Krishnamoorthi told CBS News Chicago in an exclusive interview.

How a Jammed Rifle and a Colleague’s Tip Intervened

The violent attack was averted due to a combination of equipment failure and a colleague’s quick intervention. According to investigators, Paporakis attempted to open fire at the temple, but his weapon malfunctioned (as detailed by Hindustan Times). Forced to retreat, he drove back to Palatine, where he searched the internet for instructions on unjamming the firearm before contacting a coworker.

During an extended Signal messaging conversation, Paporakis sent photographs of an AR-style rifle and pictures of himself wearing a tactical vest. He explicitly informed his colleague that his gun had jammed during the attempt (CBS News Chicago reported). The co-worker promptly alerted the Mount Prospect Police Department, which immediately coordinated with Palatine police.

Lucas Rothaar, acting special agent in charge for the FBI Chicago Field Office, said that it is a single, courageous member of the public who comes forward to prevent attacks.

Palatine Police Chief William Nord echoed those sentiments during a joint news conference, stating that we were very fortunate that something much, much worse did not happen (as reported by NBC Chicago). Paporakis has been charged with one count of making a terrorist threat and one count of unlawful possession of a weapon for possessing a rifle with a barrel shorter than 16 inches (CBS News reported).

Manifesto Recovered in Palatine Home Search

Following his arrest outside his residence near Rand Road, executing a search warrant yielded a substantial cache of weapons and extremist material. Detectives recovered an AR-style rifle without a serial number, loaded magazines, hundreds of additional rounds of ammunition, body armor, and a gas canister marked with a South Asian slur. Investigators also discovered an eight-page document titled Why I fought: A.K.A. (Aurora Shooter’s Manifesto) (Hindustan Times noted).

According to court documents obtained by Al Jazeera, the text described Jewish, Black, and Indian individuals as subhumans and detailed a long-term plan to commit mass murder. In the writings, Paporakis described himself as a sociopathic white supremacist Neo Nazi filled with hatred, fantasising about mass murder nearly every day (Hindustan Times reported). Court filings further indicated that he suffered from emotional and mental health challenges and had been without prescribed medication (CBS News noted).

Reactions and Legal Proceedings

The incident has drawn sharp reactions from federal lawmakers and diplomatic channels. India’s Ministry of External Affairs stated that the episode adds to growing concerns over racist hostility and anti-India hate in the US (BBC reported). Representative Krishnamoorthi emphasized the broader climate of hostility, stating that the threat of such violence shows how dangerous anti-Indian hatred and white supremacy have become, and we cannot wait until innocent people are killed to take these threats seriously (NBC Chicago reported).

During a court hearing, a judge ordered Paporakis to remain in custody without release while awaiting trial (Hindustan Times reported). Federal authorities noted that while state felony charges have been filed, additional federal charges remain under consideration (CBS News noted). Paporakis is scheduled to make his next appearance in court on October 30 (Al Jazeera reported).
