After spending two months in an Israeli prison, 18-year-old Ubai Youssef Abu Maria has finally been released and reunited with his family in Gaza. Upon his return, Ubai first checked to see if everyone in his family was okay before asking his parents to make a traditional Palestinian dish for breakfast.

Ubai, who had been arrested six times by Israeli forces, was among the last group of Palestinian detainees to be released under the Israel-Hamas accord. His most recent arrest occurred on October 8, and he had been held in preventive detention without being informed of the reason, a practice that can be extended indefinitely after six months.

In addition to his time in prison, Ubai also suffered a serious injury last year, losing 70 percent of his arm after being shot by Israeli forces. He was undergoing post-operative treatment when he was arrested again, just a month after having the platinum pins removed from his shoulder. Ubai stated that despite informing the authorities of his injury, he was met with neglect and even mockery from the jail doctor.

Despite the hardships he faced, Ubai expressed happiness at being reunited with his friends and family. His release comes after the release of the last group of Palestinian prisoners by Israel, marking the end of a chapter of the Israel-Hamas accord.

Ubai’s story is a reminder of the struggles faced by many Palestinian detainees and the impact of the ongoing conflict in the region. His resilience and determination to overcome the obstacles he has faced serve as an inspiration to many, and his story sheds light on the experiences of those who have been affected by the conflict.
