The number of Palestinians displaced in the Gaza Strip due to Israeli bombing following the offensive launched on Saturday by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) from the enclave has risen to nearly 190,000, according to the United Nations.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has specified in a statement that “mass displacement has increased during the last 24 hours, with 187,518 displaced, and is expected to increase.”
The organization has stated that more than 137,000 displaced people are in schools run by the United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), before adding that “around 3,000 Palestinians in Gaza are still displaced” after previous offensives by part of Israel.
Likewise, it has detailed that four schools and eight health facilities have suffered damage since the beginning of the fighting, while UNRWA has pointed out that the “intense bombings” are causing more displaced people to try to seek refuge in its facilities.
“Every effort is being made to provide basic services to the displaced, although conditions are difficult, with some shelters saturated and limited availability of drinking water,” said UNRWA, which stressed that “not all “The 83 schools are designated shelters and are not prepared to receive displaced people.”
The organization has also indicated that its office in Gaza, “where national and international personnel are present”, suffered “collateral damage” during the Israeli bombings against Gaza City. “In total, 18 UNRWA facilities have been affected since October 7,” he stressed.
