Palou Dominates at Barber: Wins Second Race of INDYCAR Season

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alex Palou is making a compelling case for a fourth consecutive NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship, and Barber Motorsports Park continues to be a key part of that narrative. The four-time champion dominated Sunday’s race, securing his second win of the season and his third career victory at the Alabama track. Palou’s performance wasn’t just a win; it was a statement, leaving competitors to grapple with his consistent speed and strategic prowess. The question now isn’t *if* Palou will contend for the title, but rather, who can consistently challenge his relentless pace.

Starting from the pole position, Palou led a remarkable 79 of the 90 laps on the challenging 17-turn, 2.3-mile road course. He crossed the finish line 13.2775 seconds ahead of Christian Lundgaard, a margin that underscored his control of the race. This victory further solidifies Palou’s position as a force to be reckoned with in the 2024 season, and echoes his previous successes at Barber, where he also won in 2021 and 2023. A pattern is emerging: Palou’s wins at Barber have historically foreshadowed championship success, a fact not lost on his rivals.

“Incredible day,” Palou said after the race. “I told you qualifying was one of the best car balances I’ve ever driven. Today in the race, it was pretty good in the beginning, really good at the end, but we suffered a little bit on the used blacks (Firestone Firehawk primary tires) that we had to use.” He added, “Another win here. Love this place, love the fans. What a great day.” The victory allowed Palou to close the gap on series leader Kyle Kirkwood, reducing the points difference from 26 to just two.

Rahal’s Return to the Podium

While Palou commanded the race, the day also marked a significant milestone for Graham Rahal. The veteran driver finished third in the No. 15 First Third Bank Honda, marking his first podium finish since August 2023 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course. Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing has been working to find consistency, and this result is a clear indication of progress.

“I felt like this was coming,” Rahal said. “We’re pretty pleased with this. Feels good.” The podium finish was a welcome boost for Rahal, who has faced challenges in recent seasons. He skillfully held off a late charge from David Malukas to maintain his position, demonstrating both speed and racecraft.

Pit Stop Drama and Lundgaard’s Fight

The race wasn’t without its dramatic moments. Christian Lundgaard, who ultimately finished second, briefly inherited the lead during Palou’s final pit stop. However, a slow right-rear wheel change during his own pit stop – taking 17.8 seconds, nearly nine seconds longer than normal – cost him valuable track position. Lundgaard dropped to third, behind Rahal, effectively ending his challenge for the win.

“I think so,” Lundgaard said when asked if he could have caught Palou without the pit stop issue. “We know the pace that we had and just how we were catching him. It’s unfortunate. The guys have done an amazing job, and I don’t think that’s (mistake) ever really happened. One in almost 100 starts, I think it’s OK.” Despite the setback, Lundgaard mounted a spirited comeback, engaging in a close battle with Rahal for second place over the final laps. He ultimately passed Rahal in Turn 5 with three laps remaining, showcasing his aggressive driving style and determination.

Malukas Continues Strong Start with Team Penske

David Malukas continued to demonstrate his potential in his first season with Team Penske, finishing fourth in the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet. Malukas has consistently placed in the top six in three of his four starts with the iconic team, signaling a promising partnership. His performance at Barber further solidifies his position as a rising star in the series.

Rounding out the top five was Kyle Kirkwood in the No. 27 JM Bullion/Gold.com Honda of Andretti Global. Despite finishing fifth, Kirkwood maintains the overall series lead, though Palou’s victory has significantly narrowed the gap. The championship battle is shaping up to be a thrilling contest between these two talented drivers.

The NTT INDYCAR SERIES now heads to Long Beach, California, for the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach on Sunday, April 19. The street circuit presents a different challenge for drivers, requiring precision and adaptability. Palou’s momentum will undoubtedly make him a favorite, but the unpredictable nature of street racing means anything can happen.

The race at Barber showcased not only Palou’s exceptional talent but also the competitive depth of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. With several drivers demonstrating strong performances, the championship race promises to be a captivating battle throughout the season.
