Public Anger Sparked by Social Media Videos
The unrest appears linked to recent social media activity by Eko Patrio and Uya Kuya.Eko Patrio faced criticism for a parody video on his TikTok account, @ekopatriosuper, featuring him dancing to “horeg” music. This was perceived by some as mocking the public and challenging those who had criticized parliamentary members for dancing during the MPR Annual Session on Friday, August 15, 2025.
Uya Kuya also drew public ire for his comments on similar issues. He defended the dancing, stating it was natural for an artist. Uya Kuya further suggested that members of parliament were akin to artists who regularly shared their lives online.”Lah, we are artists. we are the DPR, we are artists,” he reportedly said.Eko Patrio had been a member of Commission IV,overseeing trade and state businesses. Uya Kuya served in commission XI, handling financial matters.
why did this happen? The looting and subsequent removal of Eko Patrio and Uya Kuya from PAN stemmed from public outrage over perceived insensitivity and mockery following a controversial dance by parliament members during the MPR Annual Session. Eko patrio’s TikTok video and Uya Kuya’s defense of the dancing further fueled the anger.
Who was involved? The primary individuals involved were Ahmad Sahroni, Eko Patrio, and Uya Kuya, whose homes were targeted. The National Mandate Party (PAN) was also central, ultimately removing Patrio and kuya from their parliamentary positions. The unrest involved hundreds of protestors and was amplified by social media users.
What occurred? On August 30,2025,crowds looted the homes of several legislators, including Sahroni,Patrio, and Kuya, taking furniture, valuables, and even pets. This followed online criticism of the legislators’ behaviour. PAN responded by issuing an apology and removing Patrio and Kuya from the party.
