A violent crime in Germany has caused consternation. Late Friday evening, three people were killed and eight injured, five of them seriously, in a knife attack at a city festival in Solingen. The police are on site with numerous officers and the search for the fugitive perpetrator is ongoing. The background to the crime is currently unclear.
Presenter Panagiota Petridou was also at the festival on Friday and posted a snapshot in her Instagram story that evening. She can be seen on stage with a microphone in her hand, with a large crowd in the background. “650 years of Solingen! Festival of Diversity Hometown Solingen,” she wrote on the picture and added a red heart emoji. The post was taken down around the time the incident happened.
On Saturday morning, Panagiota Petridou spoke out again, writing in a post: “I am shocked and deeply affected by the terrible events in my hometown of Solingen.” They had planned a “beautiful celebration” for the city’s 650th anniversary, which she wanted to support by hosting. Now she is stunned and full of grief. “I stand here sad and can hardly find words for the pain that grips us all.”

“My thoughts are with the victims and their families and also with the people who have seen images that no one should ever see. I wish the injured a speedy recovery from the bottom of my heart.” She herself is doing well: “My family and I got home safely, given the circumstances. Thank you for all your inquiries and messages.”
