Panama announced that it is analyzing the closure of its land border with Colombia due to the increase in irregular migration due to the Darién plug, which reached 307,000 people this year.

The Panamanian government alleges “lack of international cooperation” to address the migratory phenomenon from its border with Colombia.

“This has a limit and some southern countries have turned their backs on the problem, that international call that Panama makes, the impact we have in the Darién is great,” said Juan Manuel Pino, Minister of Security.

Panamanians consider the work of southern countries to stop irregular migratory transit through the jungle corridor “insufficient” and the numbers are constantly increasing.

In addition, they add that they have spent more than 60 million dollars to serve migrants and ensure that uncontrolled transit has also caused serious “environmental damage” to the natural ecosystems of rivers that serve as sources of water for indigenous people.

Among the migrants who cross the jungle the most are mostly Venezuelans, but there are also Haitians and some Colombians.

“Remember, Darién is not a road, Darién is a jungle,” Pino said.
