Newly inaugurated President José Raúl Mulino has decided to address the problem of illegal migration through the Darién Gap by installing barbed wire.

Just hours after taking office, Mulino announced the closure of three immigration crossings frequented by people traveling from Colombia to Central America.

During his inaugural address, President Mulino firmly expressed his determination to stop illegal transit through the dangerous Darien jungle. We cannot continue to finance the economic and social cost that massive illegal immigration generates for the country.“With the involvement of international criminal organizations, Panama will no longer be a transit country for illegal immigrants,” Mulino stressed, making clear his uncompromising stance on the problem.

The implementation of these measures did not take long. Local reports confirmed that the The Panamanian government has begun installing barbed wire fences at closed points.

Luis Fernando Martínez, mayor of Acandí, Chocó, told Blu Radio: “The fences are already there, because there are already videos that have reached me, where you can see that the structure is quite aggressive, where they definitely want to limit passage,” said Martínez, highlighting the growing tension on the border.

Meanwhile, the Community Council of the Acandí River Basin assures that, for the moment, the situation remains calm, although concern about the implications of these drastic measures remains latent in the affected communities.

Mulino’s immigration policy marks a turning point in the management of illegal migration in the region, opening a chapter of uncertainty and challenges for both Panama and its neighboring countries.
