Bad Frankenhausen – The Panorama Museum Bad Frankenhausen in Thuringia is to be partially renovated in the year of remembrance for the medieval German Peasants’ War. Work on the concrete exterior structure of the round building with the spectacular painting by the Leipzig painter Werner Tübke is scheduled to begin in 2024, as a spokeswoman for the Thuringian Ministry of Infrastructure said on Wednesday. Costs of around 9 million euros are currently expected, said the spokeswoman. The construction work is scheduled to be completed in 2025 – then Thuringia wants to commemorate the Peasants’ War 500 years ago with a state exhibition in the museum.

The Panorama Museum, which opened in September 1989, is located on the historic Schlachtberg near Bad Frankenhausen, where several thousand rebellious farmers were defeated and massacred by the princely army in the decisive battle of the German Peasants’ War in May 1525. The radical preacher and peasant leader Thomas Müntzer was captured, tortured in the nearby Wasserburg Heldrungen and finally executed at the gates of the city of Mühlhausen. In the 1980s, Werner Tübke (1929-2004) created a 14 by 123 meter circular painting with more than 3,000 figures and key scenes from the events of that time.

Building built specifically for the cyclorama

The museum building was built in the 1970s specifically for the battle panorama. According to the ministry spokeswoman, the upcoming partial renovation will involve removing cracks in some concrete elements and sealing the outer wall. According to the ministry, it remains unclear whether and when a complete renovation, which construction and monument experts have been thinking about for years, can be undertaken. According to the ministry, the building is considered an experimental building and there are no standard solutions for its renovation.
