The Attorney General’s Office has issued a warning about the worrying situation of child violence in Colombia, calling it “inconceivable and reprehensible.”

Despite the constitutional and legal provisions that require the protection of the rights of children and adolescents, The current panorama shows a constant danger to which they are exposed.

The control entity has warned that minors continue to be victims of physical, sexual and psychological violence, as well as situations of bullying, neglect and child abandonment. Furthermore, the practice of early unions, forced marriages, child labor and forced recruitment represent risk contexts that require urgent attention from the authorities.

Data collected by the Institute of Legal Medicine reveals an alarming reality: in December 2023, 607 minors were victims of violent deathwhile in January 2024, 44 cases of fatal injuries in minors were reported. Furthermore, the figures for domestic violence are equally worrying, with 12,532 cases recorded in 2023 and 1,244 cases reported between January and February 2024.

The Colombian Institute of Family Welfare has also reported on the significant number of children and adolescents who have been the subject of rights restoration processes, highlighting cases of omission or negligence, sexual violence, being on the streets, abandonment, physical violence and psychological violence.

Given this serious situation, the Attorney General’s Office has urged the responsible authorities, including the Administrative Department of the Presidency of the Republic, the Ministry of Justice and Law, the National Police and the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare, to take immediate measures to reduce risk factors and protect children from new violations.

The Delegate for the Defense of the Rights of Children, Adolescents, the Family and Women has emphasized that the right to personal integrity of this population is a priority, and that it is essential to redouble efforts to guarantee their protection and continued well-being.
