About thirty million years ago, in the Oligocene period, Indricoterines, relatives of hornless rhinos, flourished on the forested plains of Eurasia, from the Balkans through Kazakhstan and Pakistan to China and Mongolia. Among them, Paraceratherium transouralicum, with a weight of fifteen to twenty tons, is the largest terrestrial mammal in all of history. At least, the one known from more or less complete fossil remains. Paraceratherium transouralicum reaches a length of about seven and a half meters, and a height at the withers of almost five meters. It is taller than any mammoth or elephant. A person of average height could have gone under his belly without bending over. The skull alone is 1.3 meters long and two feet wide.
