ASUNCIÓN, (Xinhua) — The National Service of Quality and Animal Health (Senacsa) of Paraguay confirmed the fifth high-pathogenicity avian influenza outbreak in the district of La Patria, Boquerón department, in the western region or Chaco.

Once again, these are backyard birds, while up to now no outbreaks of the disease have been detected in wild or industrially produced birds.

The director of the institution, José Carlos Martín Camperchioli, reported in this regard that in view of this situation, a team of officials is expected to be transferred to the area to carry out the verifications and also to proceed with the slaughter of the birds, which up to now has reached 199.

The first focus had been detected on May 19, and in the course of two weeks another four were confirmed, all of them in the department of Boquerón, specifically in the districts of Mariscal Estigarribia, Colonia Neuland, Faro Moro, and now in La Homeland.

Regarding the four outbreaks detected previously, the official explained that they are being managed as “sanitary vacuums”, that is to say that there are currently no birds in these areas, totally prohibiting their entry for up to a reasonable time of 28 days.

He added that since the confirmation of the cases, emergency zoning has been carried out, establishing control areas, infected zones and containment zones in accordance with what is specified in the Master Plan for Preparedness and Response to Animal Health Emergencies of the institution.

He indicated that, in addition, surveillance of both domestic and wild bird populations has been intensified throughout the country, especially in the regions related to the outbreaks.

He commented that there is currently another possible focus in attention and that so far a total of 82 suspicions have been processed throughout the country, and that of 385 samples collected, 29 tested positive for the disease.
