Parakala Prabhakar’s Critique of Central Government: “What happened in Manipur may occur in Kerala”

Kochi – Parakala Prabhakar, a leading economist and husband of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, continued to criticize the central government. He said that what happened in Manipur can also happen in Kerala and caution should be taken against it. Prabhakar was speaking at the commemoration lecture started by the Progressive Kala Sahitya Sangh in memory of late poet S. Ramesan.

He said that Manipur is still not back to normal and said that no news is coming out on this issue. “If it is not stopped now, similar riots can happen anywhere. No one should have the feeling that no matter where it happens, it will not happen in Kerala,” he said.

He accused the country’s economic sector, democracy and secularism of being in disarray under the Modi regime. Prabhakar alleged that there is no one from the country’s largest minority community in the government and they are not even given seats. He said that even as hunger, unemployment and debt of the country are increasing, the attitude of the government is to deny all this.

“From 1947 to 2014, the country’s total debt was 50 lakh crore rupees. But in the last 9 years it has increased to Rs 150 lakh crore. Unemployment is soaring. This is the reality today. For the first time since 1990, 30 crore people went hungry again. But the government says that they have lifted 23 crore people out of starvation. India ranks very low on the World Hunger Index. But the government’s claim is that all these figures are wrong and that they are anti-India. “What is happening now is that whoever speaks about the reality, they will be labeled as anti-India,” he said.

He also asked why the ration for the poor will continue for the next five years if hunger has been eradicated. He also accused that none of the figures given by the government are now reliable. “They are changing the norms. Previously, if one kilometer of four-lane road was constructed, it was calculated as 1 kilometer. But now it is increased to 4 km. Prabhakar said that the government will claim that they are building a lot of roads.
