by time news

Jaaaaaaa! We finally have the first GOLD medal at the Paralympics!

Para-triathlete Martin Schulz (31) repeats his victory from the 2016 Games (Rio), also wins in Tokyo! For the German team, it is the long-awaited first victory on the fifth day of the competition!

Our first GOLD!

Schulz overjoyed: “Everything went well. I stayed cool in my head. Last night my trainer and I realized that we are lucky enough to be the first and that I can take the first gold. That pushed me again over the last few kilometers. “

The decision is made after swimming 500 meters and cycling 20 kilometers in the final 5-kilometer run! Until then, George Peasgood (25) was in the lead. The Briton had gained one minute ahead of Schulz with a sensational swimming lap. On the bike, however, the Leipziger came within 34 seconds after the first five kilometers. Not much changed about that until the last change.

After the first of four laps, Schulz ignited the turbo, flew past Peasgood for the last 2.5 kilometers and crossed the finish line with a lead of more than 40 seconds!

Due to the high temperatures and the enormous humidity, the race in Tokyo Bay turned into a heat battle. Schulz had been preparing for this scenario for weeks, trained in a party tent at the training camp in Kienbaum, in which he had a radiant heater and a humidifier installed.

The hard work has paid off: Schulz wins Paralympic gold for the second time and Germany can finally celebrate the first medal!

Less than an hour after Schulz’s coup, Valentin Baus (25) also wins gold in table tennis!

In the final, the Bochum-born player prevailed 3-2 against the over-player Ningning Cao (33) after a 1: 2 set deficit. The Chinese won the last two Paralympics (London and Rio), defeating Baus in the final in 2016.

Now our record star has turned the tables! What a Sunday for our para-stars!
