In the ARD hit show “Immer wieder sonntags” the focus is usually on musical performances. In the current edition, things were different.
Christina Modrzejewski caused a stir this year when she took part in the “Miss Germany 2024” pageant and said on stage: “There are 7.8 million severely disabled people in Germany. I am one of them. It is incredibly hard when you have experienced a stroke of fate and then have to face society and its barriers.”
The 28-year-old suffers from Guillan-Barré syndrome and is wheelchair-bound. Her mission: barrier-free cities and more visibility for people with health problems. Christina Modrzejewski was unable to win the election, but came in second, a surprise success.
In Stefan Mross’ show “Immer wieder sonntags” Modrzejewski talks about her fate. In August 2021 she suddenly noticed numbness and tingling in her legs and feet. “I didn’t think anything of it,” says Modrzejewski. A short time later she can no longer walk, diagnosis: Guillan-Barré syndrome. From one day to the next her life changes: she is paralyzed from the waist down and dependent on a wheelchair.
She also explains how she came to take part in the Miss competition: “They were looking for someone who would take on social responsibility and I have been very involved in the topic of inclusion. I know that people with disabilities are often overlooked because they are not loud and do not dare to present themselves to the outside world.”
Her boyfriend Mihrac is a guest on “Immer wieder sonntags” – and the trained nurse has a surprise in store for him. “I just want to say thank you for the last year and a half, when you and my mom were there for me. I honestly can’t wait to marry you,” she drops the bombshell at the end. The couple plans to tie the knot in November this year.
