“A successful attack against the sole supplier in Snezhinsk, Chelyabinsk region of the Russian Federation – the Vega company – resulted in the shutdown of 1,173 switches and 10 servers. The information on Vega’s servers has been destroyed. A number of strategic companies in the city have been without internet and communication services for almost a week,” the report reads.
According to GUR, these companies include VNIITF (All-Russian Research Institute of Technical Physics), a Russian nuclear weapons developer that was only connected to the Vega supplier.
It is noted that the successful cyber-attack made it possible to obtain personal data of employees and many other documents of the factory. This information makes it possible to determine which mechanisms are used to circumvent sanctions and which persons are involved.
In addition, comments from the local public in Snezhinsk indicate that the cyber operation also threatened to disrupt the Russian state defense order.
Cyber attacks against Russian resources
On July 15, the Ukrainian community of volunteer hackers together with cyber specialists from GUR attacked about 100 online resources in the Russian space.
On July 23, a new massive cyber attack by GUR specialists against the Russian banking system began. As a result, payment systems, bank mobile applications, personal accounts, and payment for services in public transport were disrupted.
