Paramount+ Announces Avatar Kuruk: Wave of Chaos Prequel Series

Paramount+ announced Avatar Kuruk: Wave of Chaos at New York Comic Con on October 9, 2026, as a new animated prequel series. The streamer also renewed Avatar: Seven Havens for Books 3 and 4.

Co-Creators Expand Franchise With Double Reveal

During a panel at New York Comic Con on October 9, 2026, the co-creators revealed that Avatar: Seven Havens has officially secured renewals for its third and fourth books on Paramount+. The announcement coincided with the global premiere of the first three episodes of Book 1, which launched on the streaming service the same day. The animated universe built by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko is expanding in two directions at once.

The creative foundation for the franchise took shape during the pandemic in 2020, when DiMartino and Konietzko—who first met as students at the Rhode Island School of Design—began mapping out future projects for the universe. Their creative partnership originally began with the hit 2005 Nickelodeon series Avatar: The Last Airbender, a martial-arts fantasy about a boy who could harness earth, wind, fire, and water, which was followed by the acclaimed sequel series The Legend of Korra airing between 2012 and 2014. The co-creators noted that the wider franchise has potential for more than a hundred Avatars.

Joining DiMartino and Konietzko on stage were executive producer Ethan Spaulding, co-executive producer Sehaj Sethi, and voice cast members Saheli Khan, Aishu Devan, and Major Curda. The panel was moderated by Janet Varney, who originally voiced Korra in The Legend of Korra and serves as the voice director for the newly announced prequel project.

Paramount+ Orders Prequel Series About Teenage Kuruk

Alongside the Seven Havens news, Paramount+ officially ordered Avatar Kuruk: Wave of Chaos as the next television installment in the franchise.

Kuruk died at just thirty-three years old following an intense struggle with physical and mental hardships. Among his most well-known trials was his clash with Koh the Face Stealer, an evil spirit who stole away his fiancée, Ummi, leading to a desperate and ultimately losing battle to save her life. However, the new prequel avoids that dark narrative path entirely, instead highlighting a peaceful and flourishing era devoid of major wars or genocides.

Production is handled by Avatar Studios and Nickelodeon Animation Studios, with Bryan Konietzko serving as showrunner.

“bucks thousands of years of tradition by choosing to learn the four elements through globetrotting adventures, staying one step ahead of his angry teacher, rowdy pirates, and chaotic spirits — all while helping the world in his own unique ways.”

Addressing online leaks during the panel, Konietzko clarified the tone of the production. He stated that the project is not tragic and violent and dark as early rumors suggested, but rather serves as our first action comedy. Paramount+ also debuted early production artwork showcasing a youthful Kuruk waterbending, surfing, and traveling alongside his animal companion, an adorable koalaotter named Nikik.
