The Karthika Fire Festival started with the flag hoisting on the 10th at the Thiruvannamalai Annamalaiyar Temple, which is considered to be the place of fire and salvation in the Panchaputra sites of Lord Shiva. The main event of the festival is the Parani Deepam and the Maha Deepam is mounted today.

Accordingly, the Parani lamp was lit at the Thiruvannamalai Annamalaiyar temple premises this morning. Following this, the Mahadeepam will be mounted on the 2,668 feet high Annamalaiyar Hill behind the Annamalaiyar Temple at 6 pm today. For this, an opening puja was held for the cauldron and 3,500 liters of ghee and 1,000 meters of kata cloth were taken to the mountain.

Today, 5,000 local pilgrims and 15 foreign pilgrims have been allowed to visit Kiriwalam by a court order. Widespread rains lashed the Thiruvannamalai area yesterday morning, but this morning the rainfall was slightly lower. Large numbers of devotees are also expected to visit Thiruvannamalai to witness the Mahadeepam.
