Starting next year, childcare leave pay will increase from 18 million won to 23.1 million won per year, and it will be possible to apply for both maternity leave and childcare leave.

According to the Ministry of Employment and Labor on the 17th, the government deliberated and decided on three presidential decrees under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Employment and Labor, including the Partial Amendment Ordinance to the Enforcement Decree of the Employment Insurance Act, containing such content, at the Cabinet meeting this morning.

Looking at the revised contents, first of all, parental leave benefits are significantly increased. Currently, parental leave pay is 1.5 million won per month, of which 25% is paid six months after return. Starting next year, up to 2.5 million won per month will be provided. In addition, full payment is made during the period of parental leave.

If an employee uses childcare leave for 12 months, the total salary increases by 5.1 million won, from 18 million won to 23.1 million won. In the case of children within 18 months of age, if both parents use the childcare leave system together, the couple will receive 29.6 million won each, for a total of 59.2 million won, when taking childcare leave for one year.

In addition, starting next year, the government will provide subsidies for replacement workers to small and medium-sized businesses when positions become vacant due to childcare leave. A new subsidy for work sharing related to childcare leave has also been established.

If a small business owner sends an employee on childcare leave for a year and hires a replacement worker, the government will provide support of 1.2 million won per month, up to a maximum of 14.4 million won for one year. Jeonbuk, Gyeongbuk, Gwangju, and Ulsan plan to provide additional support of up to 2 million won per year for workers hired as replacement workers. In the Seoul area, the maximum is 1.2 million won per year.

In addition, according to the revision of the Enforcement Decree of the Equal Employment Opportunity Act, it will be possible to apply for maternity leave and childcare leave together. The purpose is to ease the burden of workers applying for childcare leave.

Additionally, when an employee applies for childcare leave, the employer must express its intention to grant it in writing within 14 days. If no employee expresses his/her intention, the employee may use parental leave as requested.

In addition, the Enforcement Decree of the Employment and Industrial Accident Insurance Premium Collection Act will be revised, and the industry and occupation will be additionally disclosed when personal information of large or habitual defaulters of employment and industrial accident insurance premiums is disclosed.
