The Legacy of the Paris Olympic Games
The 2024 Paris Olympic Games have come to a close, leaving behind a trail of memories and a significant legacy. French President Emmanuel Macron acknowledged the immense efforts of all those involved, describing the Games as “a success in terms of organisation, security, a sporting and popular success.”
In his speech at the Gardens of Champs-Elysees, Macron highlighted the dynamic nature of the Games and emphasized the need to continue fostering such dynamism. He also acknowledged the numerous challenges faced at the outset, but praised the gradual resolution of those issues.
The Paris Games aimed to leave a lasting impact beyond just sporting achievements. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has set a goal for each host city to create a positive and lasting legacy. In the case of Paris, this is evident in several ways.
Environmental Sustainability:
The most visible legacy is the revitalization of the Seine River and its tributaries. This ambitious project, costing approximately 1.4 billion euros, will enable Parisians to enjoy bathing in the river starting next year. Additionally, 95% of the Games’ sites were either existing or temporary, with significant emphasis on green spaces and sustainable practices.
Infrastructure Improvements:
The Games also led to significant infrastructure improvements in the Paris region. The extension of metro line 14 to Orly Airport, the first such extension since 1998, is a notable achievement. Additionally, several metro and RER lines were extended, enhancing the everyday lives of locals.
Social Impact:
The Games also addressed a long-held desire of Parisians: accessible public transport to Orly Airport. Beyond physical infrastructure, the Games also had a social impact. The cauldron installed in the Tuileries Gardens proved immensely popular with the public and should remain a permanent fixture.
Challenges and Discrepancies:
Despite the undeniable success of the Games, certain challenges and discrepancies emerged. Athletes expressed concerns about the insufficient cooling system and inadequate sleeping conditions at the Olympic Village. Additionally, the presence of thousands of undocumented migrants living in precarious conditions under bridges cast a shadow over the celebrations.
