An opening ceremony under very close surveillance. Paris police chief Laurent Nuñez detailed this Wednesday the security perimeter for the parade of delegations on the Seine on Friday July 26 at the opening of the Olympic Games.

A very large area to be secured which will require maximum attention from law enforcement. As for the other Olympic sites, three perimeters blue (through traffic to be avoided), red (traffic prohibited) and gray (Olympic sites) have been drawn.

But a small particularity, the security perimeters will open several days before the ceremony and will change on D-Day. “For obvious security reasons, we do not want to give the precise moment when the perimeters will be drawn,” indicated Laurent Nuñez. For the first perimeter before the ceremony, all the quays of the Seine as well as the riverside homes will be subject to a traffic ban over an area of more than 10 km (7 km of parade and between 3 and 4 km of storage zone for the boats).

“The SILT perimeter will also include buildings bordering the Seine, as long as these buildings provide visibility on the parade,” specified the Paris police prefect. Laurent Nuñez also added that “axes” will be put in place to allow Parisians to circulate and “cross these areas” without giving more details.

A very wide security perimeter on D-Day

For D-Day, this perimeter will expand considerably to include as far west as the Champs-Élysées. It will be applied on the D-Day and until “a few hours after the ceremony”. “It will be broader in particular to ensure the security of the heads of state present that day on the Esplanade du Trocadéro,” explained Laurent Nuñez. Forgotten blue, red and gray will dominate with fairly strict traffic restrictions. “You will have to be searched, show your credentials,” the Paris police prefect confided in our columns this Tuesday. The low quays will thus be managed by the COJO and the high quays by the State and the city of Paris.

However, it will not be impossible for those living near the scene to invite their loved ones to watch the ceremony from their window. “You have to register them on the platform. This will involve a declaratory obligation which will rest on the resident with the production of the identities of the people invited. For accommodation barges, it will be the same principle,” Laurent Nuñez explained to us. See you on July 26, 2024.
