The unauthorized presence of a climber forced the French authorities to unexpectedly close the Eiffel Tower a few hours before the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games. The alarm was raised around 3:30 PM, and police began evacuating tourists. A group was stranded on the second floor for approximately half an hour before managing to descend. According to French broadcaster BfmTv, the climber has been apprehended.
The Eiffel Tower played a central role in the opening ceremony of the XXXIII Olympic Games, but tonight’s final event will instead take place at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, north of the capital. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 9pm.
