Two police officers were shot and injured Thursday evening at the police station in the 13th arrondissement of Paris, boulevard de l’Hôpital, by a man who grabbed an official’s weapon, we learned from police sources.

Around 10:25 p.m., “this individual stole a weapon from a civil servant which he used before being neutralized,” said the Paris police prefect, Laurent Nuñez, who went to the scene. “Two police officers were seriously injured,” he confirmed.

The vital prognosis of one of the two police officers was in jeopardy Thursday evening, after midnight. Taken care of – “first by their colleagues whose courage I want to salute, then by the Paris firefighters”, specified Laurent Nuñez, the two police officers were transported to the hospital, one to the Pitié Salpêtrière (13th arrondissement) and the other at the Hôtel-Dieu (4th).

The attacker had just been arrested for a “violent attack” on a woman, “around 10 p.m.”, “in a building on the Quai de la Gare”, indicated Laurent Nuñez. He had “been arrested in the evening for having struck a woman with a box cutter,” the Paris prosecutor’s office said.

According to a police source at Le Parisien, the police were carrying out a search when he grabbed the weapon from one of them before using it and hitting two law enforcement officers, the one to the thorax and the other to the hip.

The police officers inside the police station returned fire, injuring the individual in the chest. His vital prognosis was not in jeopardy Thursday evening, according to the prosecution. “The investigations will have to specify in particular the circumstances of the facts, the identity of the accused, as well as his possible links with the female victim (of the attack for which he was arrested)”, continues the prosecution.

Three open investigations

Three separate investigations have been opened, announced the Paris prosecutor’s office on the night of Thursday to Friday: “one for attempted murder of the woman” on the Quai de la Gare; another “for attempted murder of persons holding public authority”; a third, entrusted to the General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN), for “intentional violence with a weapon by a person holding public authority”, the usual procedure in the event of a police shooting.

The police prefect arrived on site shortly after midnight, with the Paris public prosecutor, Laure Beccuau, providing “(their) support to the staff who are very affected”. Laurent Nuñez could not, however, give further details on the state of health of the two police officers when he spoke, around 1 a.m., in front of the police station. “There is a lot of emotion following these facts which are extremely serious. We are very concerned about the state of health of the two police officers, he only indicated. We are all very worried. The circumstances of the facts will be established by the ongoing judicial investigation. »
