Total is accused of not making an effort to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. A legal procedure that could compel the French hydrocarbon giant has been launched by associations and NGOs. This Wednesday, September 21, we learned that the cities of Paris, Poitiers and New York are joining the procedure, wanting to bend Total which, for the moment, refuses to confront each other.

16 communities and 6 associations are now asking the Paris court to compel TotalEnergies to recognize the risks generated by its activities and to adopt a real decarbonization plan. For Emmanuel Grégoire, first deputy mayor of Paris, Total is not playing the game and the arrival of two opponents as powerful as Paris and New York could weigh in the balance: “ The reality of global warming in a city like Paris and like New York, we know how to materialize it. It’s heat peaks, it’s pollution, it’s excess mortality. And then, Total’s major investments today are not in renewable energies. They are to continue to exploit, to detect deposits, to build pipelines, to exploit countries which are already very tested by these industrial stories. »

45% reduction in emissions by 2030?

Of course, Total has developed a vigilance plan, but for François de Cambiaire, lawyer for this coalition, these commitments are not enough: “ They are not aligned with the carbon neutrality trajectory to which Total is committed. They do not conform to the reduction trajectories, which are, today, reduction trajectories scientifically validated by the work of the IPCC. And so, we are asking Total to rectify the situation. »

Because Total is committed: less than 45% of emissions by 2030. Last year, in the Netherlands, a court had sentenced the oil tanker Shell and forced him to raise his climate ambitions
