On the 17th (local time), 9 days before the opening of the Paris Olympics, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo appeared in a full-body swimsuit on the banks of the Seine River near the 4th arrondissement of Paris, France. Also present were former canoeist Tony Estanguet, President of the Paris Olympic Organizing Committee, Pierre Rabadan, Paris Deputy Mayor in charge of the Olympics and the Seine River, and Marc Guillaume, the President of the Paris Metropolitan Region.
Mayor Anne Hidalgo was originally scheduled to jump into the Seine River on the 23rd of last month, but postponed her schedule due to water quality issues and the fast current. During the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games, triathlon swimming events and open water swimming, known as the “swimming marathon,” will be held on the Pont Alexandre III and Pont de la Alma sections of the Seine River.
Due to deteriorating water quality, the Seine River has been closed to entry since 1923. Paris, which successfully hosted the Olympics this year, has been carrying out a large-scale project to purify the Seine River by investing 1.4 billion euros (about 2 trillion won) over 7 years to install sewage treatment plants and rainwater treatment plants and crack down on the discharge of wastewater.
