Abhishek Upadhyay, New Delhi: The first modern Olympic Games were held in 1896 and the participation of women was zero. Paris was the host of the second edition of the Olympics. Then for the first time women players took part in these games. 22 women participated in the Paris Olympics held in the year 1900. After 124 years of that small beginning, now it is going to happen for the first time in the Olympics that the participation of women and men players will be almost 50-50. The latest figures of the organizers of the Paris Olympics show that this time a total of 11,215 players will participate in these games. Of these, 49% athletes are women (5,503) while 51 percent (5712) are men. The participation of women players in the Tokyo Olympics was 47.2%.
The US team has more female athletes than men
Once again, the largest contingent from America will reach Paris. America is sending 638 players to Paris. Out of these, 338 i.e. 53 percent are women. A small country Guam will have seven players in its team. Out of these, six are women. In terms of percentage, its team has 87.5 percent women players which is the highest. Gender equality is not limited to players only. Due to the efforts of the Olympic Mission, the number of women officials conducting these games has also increased significantly. In Tokyo Olympics, about 30 percent technical officials were women. In Paris, their number has increased to 40 percent.
Increasing participation of women in Olympics
40% women in Indian teamThis time the participation of women players in the Indian team is around 40%. In the Rio Olympics (2016), the Indian team had 54 women players as compared to 63 men, which was 46 percent of the total participation. Since the Olympics of 2000, the participation of women players in the Indian team has been better except for the London Olympics. In the year 2012, 23 of the 83 players who went to London were women.
