High-speed train service disrupted in Paris

Local storms disrupted all high-speed train traffic linking Paris with the country’s southeast as well as Switzerland in both directions on Wednesday. Thousands of passengers travelling during the Olympics and summer holidays were stranded, French rail company SNCF said. All high-speed train services leaving and arriving at the French capital’s Gare de Lyon train station had to be halted because of trees fallen on the tracks, SNCF said.

A train hit a tree in Burgundy, southeast of Paris. Regular trains use different tracks and their service was not affected. SNCF said authorities cut off power to the track and work to remove the tree had begun. However, it will take more time to restore service, so all trains leaving the station have been recalled so people can find alternative means of travel.
