August 11, 2024, 13:48:21
The final phase of the Paris Olympics 2024 is underway, with the closing ceremony scheduled for today, August 11th. Indian wrestlers have been performing admirably throughout the Games, securing several medals.
On Saturday, August 10th, wrestler Ritika Hooda shone in the 76 kg category. She defeated Bernadette Nagy 12-2 in the pre-quarterfinals but faced a setback in the quarter-finals, losing 1-1 to Medet Kaiji Aiperi of Kyrgyzstan. However, she still has a chance to compete for the bronze medal.
How can Ritika qualify for the bronze medal match?
Ritika can still participate in the bronze medal match if Medet Kaiji Aiperi advances to the final of the competition. This is due to the repechage system in wrestling.
India’s lone wrestling medal
While the Indian wrestling team has performed well, they have only secured one medal so far. Aman Sehrawat clinched the bronze medal in the 57 kg category, defeating Darian Cruz of Puerto Rico 13-5 in the bronze medal match.
Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification
Another Indian wrestler, Vinesh Phogat, reached the final of the 50 kg category but was disqualified for being 100 grams overweight. She had secured a silver medal, but this was later revoked. Vinesh has filed an appeal against this decision. The Court of Arbitration for Sports will announce their verdict on Saturday night at 9:30 pm Indian time.
