New Delhi: Six table tennis players from India are going to participate in the Olympics this time. All of them have qualified for Paris on the basis of the current world rankings. China is the powerhouse of these games, but despite its presence, India is expected to perform well in the team event. Men’s and women’s team events in table tennis were included for the first time in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Through Paris 2024, India will participate in the team event of TT for the first time. Qualification in the team event itself is being seen as an achievement for Indian table tennis because only 16 countries of the world get a chance to participate in this event and India is also included in them. While the Indian men’s team is ranked 14th in the world, the women’s team is ranked 11th in the world. A surprising performance is expected from the women’s team of Manika Batra and Sreeja Akula.

One reason behind this expectation is India’s performance in the World Team Table Tennis Championship. In that championship held in Busan, Sreeja had done wonders by defeating China’s world number-2 player. Sreeja has also recently become the first Indian to win the World Table Tennis Contender title, which has boosted the morale of the Indian team. Apart from this, Achanta Sharath Kamal is also present in the Indian team, who is going to play his fifth and last Olympics. Some upset performances can be expected from this number one player of India in men’s singles.
