According to the experts of the Finnish cyber security company “WiSecure”, the organizers of this year’s Summer Olympics in Paris should prepare for a greater risk of cyber attacks compared to previous games “due to geopolitical unrest”.
In its report, WihSecure identifies Russia as the most likely source of cyber attacks. Experts say they have identified three groups intent on disrupting the Games: state-sponsored actors, private “hacker activists” and common cybercriminals.
“Russian state actors almost certainly pose the greatest threat to a successful and smooth Olympic Games, with both the ability and the intent to undermine the Olympics and France,” the report said.
Due to Moscow’s war in Ukraine, athletes from Russia and Belarus can only participate in the Paris Olympics under a neutral flag. They are also barred from the opening ceremony and cannot have any connection with the military.
According to experts, the attackers’ main goal will be to breach the organizers’ networks and encrypt data to disrupt the event.
According to the study, the core networks of the Olympics are well protected against cyber attacks, meaning the risk of disruption is low to moderate.
