Russia is waging war on Ukraine for the 18th day today. Russian forces occupying various cities in Ukraine are busy seizing the capital, Kiev. Russia, meanwhile, has launched airstrikes on the southeastern city of Mariupol.
Various countries are trying to stop this war. As a result of these efforts, Russia has announced a temporary ceasefire in some parts of Ukraine. Russia has also agreed to allow civilians to evacuate safely from areas where a ceasefire has been declared and to provide humanitarian assistance. But, in most areas the fighting continues.
In this context, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olab Scholes telephoned Russian President Vladimir Putin to call for a ceasefire.
The French House of Representatives has issued a statement regarding the talks. In it, Putin is said to be very transparent and tough. “Russia has shown no interest in ending the war in Ukraine.”
