Paris will limit the speed of cars

by time news

The municipality of Paris announced new speed limits for cars on the streets of the French capital.

Starting in September, cars of all categories will be allowed to travel at a speed of no more than 30 km / h (19 mph). According to a municipality spokesman, this measure is aimed at reducing emissions of exhaust gases into the atmosphere and reducing the number of car accidents, which will make the city “more pedestrian-friendly.”

The attitude to this step divided the Parisians. Car owners are outraged; drivers of food delivery vehicles say that this will cause their customers to wait longer for orders to arrive; taxi drivers say speed limits will increase fares and lower their income. But public opinion polls show a majority of Parisians approve of the move because they hope the streets will become safer and quieter. The new rules provide exceptions for several wide avenues, including the famous Champs Elysees in the center of the capital and the ring road.
