Some 1.3 million voters were invited to go to the polls to vote “for or against the creation of a specific rate for the parking of heavy, bulky, polluting individual cars”. The vote, which took place without incident according to the Town Hall, ended at 7 p.m.
Since the “for” has won, the driver of a thermal or plug-in hybrid vehicle exceeding 1.6 t, or 2 t for an electric vehicle, will now have to pay 18 euros per hour for parking for districts 1 to 11 and 12 euros for the outer districts, three times the base rate.
The price will be unchanged for drivers of smaller cars: 6 euros per hour for the central districts and 4 euros in the rest of the capital. The surcharge will also not concern Parisians who benefit from a resident rate.
A measure debated next May
However, the measure will not be implemented immediately, as it will have to be debated at the Paris Council next May by Parisian elected officials. If adopted, it will take several months for the City to implement the new rate.
At the beginning of December, the PS mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, estimated that the larger a vehicle was “bigger, the more [il] chicken[ait] “. She also raised a road safety issue as accidents involving SUVs are “twice as fatal for pedestrians as with a standard car”.
